Kannawidan: Ylocos Religious Festival


 


     
     I know that we are all familiar with the word “Kannawidan Festival”. It is a festival in province of Ilocos Sur commemorating the separation of the two Ilocos provinces (Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte) in 1818. Kannawidan Festival lasts from the last week of January and first week of February. Kannawidan Festival showcased of indigenous performances, religious rituals, and cooking demos about the best Ilocano dishes.

 

     Kannwidan Festival is the way Ilocano people show their Culture and Tradition to other people. During Kannawidan Festival, there are many events that we can watch one of them is the “Tadek”. Tadek is a unique traditional dance performed by men and women to express thanksgiving, jubilation over victory and other important events. There are also concerts in the night during the Kannawidan Festival, many guest were perform to the stage as the audience watch their performances. There are also places that you can buy foods that made by Ilocano people, furniture that made by Ilocano people, pets, and many more during the Kannawidan Festival.

 

      Let us all be aware that respecting traditions and culture of one place is being a good person. Just like the Ilocano people, they respect other culture so that the others will also respect the culture of Ilocanos like the celebration of Kannawidan Festival.
